Whether hiking, cycling, golf or surfing, the western Algarve offers many exciting sporting opportunities.
Hiking
Breathtaking views await hikers along the trails that follow the cliffs and beaches. In the varied hinterland, walkers can discover both the diverse landscape and the region’s fascinating culture.
Trilho dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Trail)

The Fishermen’s Trail stretches for 226.5 km along the spectacular coastline of the western Algarve. Divided into 23 stages, this long-distance hiking route leads from Lagos to Sines. Sturdy footwear, surefootedness, and in some sections a good head for heights are essential. Even those who tackle only part of a stage will be rewarded with stunning views of the sea and the dramatic cliffs. The path frequently descends to one of the idyllic beaches, inviting walkers to take a refreshing dip in the ocean. Outside the main season, however, many beach cafés remain closed, and online information is not always reliable. It is therefore advisable to carry plenty of water and provisions.
Rota das 5 Aldeias de Budens
The municipality of Budens comprises five villages, nestled in a charming and varied landscape. Two well-marked circular trails invite visitors to explore the region on foot. Those who prefer a shorter walk can easily cut the route and enjoy just a section of the trail.
One particularly scenic route is the PR7 hiking trail, the “Trilho dos Romanos e dos Piratas“. It leads from Budens to the beach of Boca do Rio and continues along the impressive cliffs to Burgau. The trail takes its name from a Roman-era water source and the remains of old fortifications that were once built to defend against pirates. For the return journey, we recommend taking the inland route. It offers more shade and is less demanding.

The PR8 hiking trail, known as the “Trilho dos Dinossauros“, leads from Budens to Salema. At the eastern end of Salema beach, clearly visible dinosaur tracks can be seen. From there, the path continues along the coast to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve – Praia da Figueira. The return route takes you through the picturesque village of Figueira.
Cycling
The EuroVelo 1 runs along the entire Algarve coastline. Further inland, the Via Algarviana offers mountain bikers a more challenging, sportier experience. Away from the well-trodden paths, it’s also worth taking a shorter ride to explore the surroundings.
If you haven’t brought your own bike, you can hire – or even buy – one at Musette.bike in nearby Almadena. Guided tours are also available there.
Yoga
Numerous facilities and private instructors offer the opportunity to deepen your yoga practice or take it up for the first time. At the nearby Salema Eco Camp, various styles of yoga are taught, along with Qi Gong.
The Sagres Hub is around 16 km away and offers an even wider range of activities. If yoga, breathwork or kickboxing sound too intense, you can unwind in the sauna or try cold water immersion. For those who prefer not to work alone, the co-working space provides a suitable and inspiring place to get things done.
Golfing
The Algarve in the south of Portugal is a paradise for golf lovers. Over 30 golf courses stretch along the picturesque coastline, many of them with breathtaking sea views. The mild climate and over 300 days of sunshine a year make the region an ideal year-round golfing destination.
Santo Antonio Golf offers a sporty 18-hole course with driving range directly in Budens. Beginners and professionals alike will find suitable challenges on the hilly terrain. Guests are welcome here.
